Henry Graham Ashmead Biography
A 16 page book is available in some libraries about John Ashmead:
Voyages of Captain John Ashmead Between The Years 1758 and 1782
In a condensed and straightforward style this old mariner recounts his early days in the coasting and Caribbean trades. He found the highest use for his talents during the American Revolution when he ran powder for the colonies. On a merchant voyage during the war he was chased by the British and was captured at Bermuda. He gained his freedom after 6 weeks but was captured again later in the War, this time in company with Decatur. "After being 2 or 3 weeks paroled to Long-Island, Lord Cornwallis was taken and all our masters of vessels, about 140, were suffered to go home on parole." A couple of later 19th century letters to newspapers are reprinted at the back of the account, and they give some additional information about Ashmead and his life. In one of these it is asserted that Ashmead sailed on 100 voyages. The Ashmeads were a prominent Philadelphia family, and in fact Capt. Ashmead was related to Benjamin Rush. According to a penciled note at the front this pamphlet was printed in a very limited edition for family use.
