HOPING AGAINST HOPE A STARTLING RUMOR REFUTED. Why Mary Gregory's Funeral was Delayed - Stories that She Showed Signs of Life at the Grave Disproved. "She was dead when I left her," said Dr. F. J. WHITTEMORE this morning when asked about the rumored revival into life of Mary E. GREGORY, who was supposed to have died at North Haven Friday afternoon last. "If the family think she's alive, it is their imagination, that's all" he added. There was much excitement over the report in the upper part of this city last evening. The deceased had lived there before her father, ex-Councilman George GREGORY moved to the village. No one knew anything however as to the truth of the wonderful statement. A REGISTER reporter this morning ascertained that the remains had been taken to Darien where Mrs. Gregory's grand parents live, for interment. Thither he went. The remains were brought to Darien about half-past one o'clock Monday afternoon and taken at once to the cemetery at Ox ???? Noroton. Here there were services, after which the ???????????????? relatives and friends to take a farewell view. All were surprised at a red tinge on both ears. Other than this, however, the face as well as the hands had the ordinary appearance of a dead body. Dr. GORHAM was among the mourners, being a relative. Appealed to; he without hesitation stated that the girl was dead, that there could be no life in the body.....(rest of this is cut off in photo). Footnotes: Seller stated: 1846 Concord NH Luther Roby Bible that belonged to the William Gregory family of Norwalk, Darien and Stamford, Connecticut. It does not have any written family birth/marriage records but it has a lot of pinned in newspaper clippings (old) and related paper items about the Gregory family, etc. Also is an unidentified tintype of a young girl - not identified but probably that of Mary Gregory (1860-1879). I am certain many of the related paper items contain invaluable genealogy info.

Another handwritten page reads: James ROGERS Died 27 March 1846. Mary Ann ROGERS Died 26 August 1849 13 1/2. Lucy Anna ROGERS Died 18 July 1856 11 yr. My Poor Wife Elizabeth ROGERS Died at ?????? December 16th 1874 Aged 78. John Rogers Died (writing faint, can't make it out). Footnotes: Seller stated: it has two pages of the Rogers family history starting with James Rogers born 1830 died 1846 at 16. Lucy and Elizabeth were buried in Belvidere in 1869 & 1864 respectively. This leads me to believe they were based around the great town of Belvidere IL. Seller has Ebay ID of mikeelrick.
