The California Office of Vital Records houses the California state vital records.  At present time, they do not have indexes or search capabilities online.  View instructions for ordering certificates on their site as some restrictions do apply.  Birth and death records begin in 1905.  Marriage and divorce records are not available in this office. Order Vital Records from VitalChek  VitalChek is the approved, quick and easy way to order California birth records and order California death records online.

Marriage certificates and divorce records should be requested from the California county where the event occurred.   The office of the county clerk or recorder holds the marriage records and the Superior Court of the county holds the actual divorce records.
