Origin of the word "sheriff"
Over 1000 years ago in England, the shire, was formed when groups of hundreds banded together. The shire was the forerunner of the modern county. Just as each hundred was led by a reeve (chief), each shire had a reeve as well. To distinguish the leader of a shire from the leader of a mere hundred, the more powerful official became known as the shire-reeve.

Sheriff seems to be one of those words which is often misspelled. Common misspellings include sherrif, sherif, and sherriff. The correct spelling is SHERIFF.

Texas Past Sheriffs

I find it interesting to note.... while gathering these links, Texas was the only state where I found a woman listed as sheriff. In fact, I located five women who served in the capacity of sheriff. One in Bexar County, one in Collin County, two in Gray County and and in Glasscock County, I find Amy M. Teele who completed her husband's (Walter Teele) term as sheriff during WWII. All of these women completed their husband's term for various reasons. Usually it occurred when the sheriff died. Letting the wife complete the term seems to have been the order of business when a sheriff in Texas was lost.
