HELENA SEX OFFENDER GETS 16 YEARS

HELENA - A 37-year-old Helena man who had sex numerous times with a 13-year-old girl, and photographed her in a sexual act, has been sentenced to 16 years in federal prison.
Daniel Dietz was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Helena. After meeting the girl, Dietz tracked her down through her MySpace account online and spoke with her about sexually explicit matters. He was sentenced by the state to 10 years in prison for having sex with the girl.

The federal charges include one count of coercion and one count of transferring obscene material to minors. They reflect his use of the Internet to transfer obscene pictures to the girl.

His sentence of 16 years and three months will run concurrent to the state prison term.

BILL WOULD RESTRICT WHERE YOUNG SEX OFFENDERS LIVE

HELENA - A bill that could prevent juvenile sex offenders from living near schools was heard Friday by the House Judiciary Committee.

The proposed law would extend the same limitations existing for adult sex offenders to juveniles rated most likely to re-offend. In addition to schools, they would not be allowed to live near daycares, churches or public parks.

Republican Rep. Ray Hawk of Florence sponsored the legislation, after learning that a juvenile offender was living within 30 feet of a playground in his district.


The Florence-Carlton school was shocked to discover the 17-year-old offender living with relatives in a trailer from where he could watch schoolchildren playing.

“It caused a paralysis in our community,” said John McGee, the superintendent of the district.
